Water with a pH value below 6.5 (acidic water) can lead to corrosion
Acidic Water or Low pH Water will eventually cause plumbing to wear thin, resulting in blue stains, pinhole leaks and potentially even illness to members of the household. 
The water pH should be raised to above 7 ideally, taking it into the neutral to alkaline range. This correction is often needed when Iron or Manganese removal is required. Acidic water is defined as having a pH below 6.5, and can be very damaging to the home. The safe pH range is between 6.5 – 9.5
Acidic water will actually corrode pipes, removing the copper and leaching it into your home’s water supply. Oxidized copper deposits will then leave a greenish-blue staining in sinks and toilets, and on shower walls. When the copper in your home’s pipes wears thin enough, pinhole leaks will develop and require repair. The combination of heat and acidic water will cause even more damage, causing water heaters to fail prematurely.
If acidic water is left untreated, the entire plumbing system in a home will have to be replaced at significant expense.
Signs of Acidic Water
- Blue-green staining will discolor shower walls, sink drains and around faucet handles
- Pipes and plumbing will develop pinhole leaks
- Water heaters and other appliances will corrode and need to be replaced
- Water can have a bitter taste or smell
- pH test result is below 6.5
- Can cause pipes to leach metals, causing health problems
